In Lawtons, NY, close to Buffalo, you’ll find Big Benz, an Akita breeder operated by Jolene, Lynny, and Dave Benzinger.

Big Benz has been involved with Akitas for over 30 years. They are a small kennel that tries to improve the breed generation after generation. Since they’re a small breeder, they only have 1 or 2 litters a year. You’ll likely end up on a waitlist before being able to buy a puppy from them. However, it’s worth it as their pups are very high quality.

Big Benz breeds for good temperament, structure, and health. To ensure the latter, all the dogs in their breeding program are health tested. They are OFA’d on hips and CERF’d on eyes to ensure that they will not pass any disease to their offspring.

They have 4 males and 5 females in their breeding program, the pedigrees and OFA numbers of which can be found on their website

Besides breeding, Jolene, the child of Lynny and Dave also shows their wonderful dogs in the show ring and has won a variety of awards and titles with them.

On the whole, Big Benz ticks all the boxes of a reputable breeder and is definitely worth checking out.

Final words

Getting a puppy is a very exciting time, but it can also be stressful. After all, the breeder you choose lays the foundation for the rest of your puppy’s life, and by extension, the next 10-12 years of your life.

Good breeders raise healthy and social puppies that grow up to be confident dogs. Bad breeders, on the other hand, raise pups with health and behavioral issues.

For that reason, it is so important that you take your time to carefully select a breeder. Look around at several breeders and get as much information about them as possible. Making this choice is never something that should be done hastily!

I also recommend looking outside of your own state. Sometimes, the perfect puppy is waiting just outside of New York and it’s worth taking a little trip to get it.

Hopefully, though, this list of breeders can serve as a good starting point in your search for the perfect puppy!

ThePetFaq recommends adoption from a rescue center over buying from a breeder. However, we also understand that adopting is not always possible and that there are many good reasons for choosing to buy from a breeder. Please note that we did not visit these breeders in person, however, we did research them to find as much information about them as possible. Always do your own research when buying a puppy!
