Akitas are loyal, faithful, and alert dogs that were used to guard Japanese nobility in the feudal ages. Nowadays, people tend to keep them as companions.
If you’ve set your sight on the Akita as your next dog, then the next step is finding a good, reputable breeder that will sell you a puppy. However, finding a good breeder tends to be easier said than done and is a process that takes a lot of time and energy.
To make the process much easier, we’ve compiled a list of 4 Akita breeders in Ohio. In addition to the breeder’s names, we’ve also included their contact details, location, prices (where they’re available), and much more. That way, you can save tremendous amounts of time on research.
4 Akita Puppy Breeders in Ohio
1. Mimar Akitas
|Listed on ACA?||Yes|
Mimar is an Akita breeder located in Austintown, OH, which is between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. It is operated by Mary and Mike Mignogna who have been involved with the breed since 2002 and produced their first litter in 2013.
Aside from breeding, Mary is also an active participant in the show ring. She trains and shows the dogs in conformation, rally, and obedience through the AKC, CKC, and the ICA and the dogs have won a variety of titles and awards. Furthermore, she’s a member of various kennel and Akita clubs.
Mimar runs a small breeding program. They have 2 males and 1 female of their own, named Apollo, Mikki, and Polli. You can find the pedigrees of each dog on their website.
In addition, Mimar also takes health very seriously, which is great to see. The dogs in their breeding program are health tested and you can find the OFA and CERF numbers on their website.
There are also many beautiful pictures of their adult dogs as well as previous litters available on their website, which gives you a great idea of what to expect.
On the whole, this breeder ticks all the boxes of a responsible breeder and is definitely worth looking into. Do note though that they’re a small breeder and that you might end up on a waiting list before you’re eligible to adopt a puppy.
2. Firebrand Akitas
|Listed on ACA?||Yes|
Firebrand is a small, family-owned kennel located in Central Ohio, near Columbus. It’s operated by Dr. Erin Runcan, DVM, DACT, who has a passion for the breed and focuses on producing responsibly bred AKC Akitas.
Erin is a member of the AKC as well as the ACA. She takes the craft of breeding very seriously and produces high-quality pups that are healthy and social.
Currently, Firebrand has 2 dogs in its breeding program. The male is named MaJer, and the female is named Ember. Both dogs have been extensively health tested and the OFA numbers are available on their website so that you can verify them in the OFA database.
In addition, they also have the pedigrees of both MaJer and Ember listed on their website, as well as the show results that the dog has obtained.
When you buy an Akita pup from Firebrand, it’ll go to its forever home at 10 weeks of age. By that time, it will have been properly socialized and in excellent health. Erin is a veterinarian, so she can ensure that the pups are kept in great shape. They will also be examined by an independent veterinarian at the appropriate ages, who will also give them their deworming and shots.
Overall, Firebrand definitely seems like a good breeder that operates out of love rather than for profit. Since they’re a small breeding program though, it’s very likely that you’ll have to spend some time on a waitlist before you’ll be eligible to adopt a pup.
3. Mitsuko Akitas
|Listed on ACA?||No|
Mitsuko is an Akita breeder located in Fayetteville. They specialize in producing American Akitas for conformation and temperament.
This breeder seems to be more on the commercial side compared to the previous two listings. They do not have health test results of their breeding stock available on their website, nor do they have the pedigrees listed there. You could try contacting them to see if they will provide you with this information.
They do have some decent reviews online, but also some negative ones.
4. Central Ohio Akitas
|Name||Central Ohio Akitas|
|Listed on ACA?||No|
This breeder is located in Fresno and is operated by Katie. They breed AKC purebred Akita puppies for the Ohio Market.
This breeder is not listed on the ACA website. They have 4 dogs in their breeding program, but they only list their names on their website. They do not list their pedigrees or the results of their health checks. Perhaps they do have this info, but you’d have to ask them about it.
When you buy a puppy here, expect it to come with registration papers as well as a 1-year health guarantee.
So, there you have it, the 4 Akita breeders in the state of Ohio. In my opinion, numbers 1 and 2 seem to have the best breeding program. They have the results of their health tests listed on their website so that you can easily check them in the OFA database and they also have the pedigrees available for you to see. It is of course possible that the other 2 breeders on this list also have this information, but they do not publicly list it.
Since there are not so many Akita breeders active in Ohio, it might also be worth it to look outside your own state. For many people it’s worth it to take a trip to a different state in order to find their perfect puppy. If you did not find a suitable breeder on this list, I recommend checking out some breeders in nearby Pennsylvania as well!
ThePetFaq recommends adoption from a rescue center over buying from a breeder. However, we also understand that adopting is not always possible and that there are many good reasons for choosing to buy from a breeder. Please note that we did not visit these breeders in person, however, we did research them to find as much information about them as possible. Always do your own research when buying a puppy!
