With that being said, let’s take a look at the top 8 Akita breeders in Texas!
8 Akita Breeders in Texas
1. Mayoke Akitas
Mayoke was founded in 2005 by Ilka Wagner-Van Zandt and Jay Van Zandt in Hearne, Texas. They are AKC Akita breeders of merit and have a love for the breed, which shines through in their breeding program.
They have 3 boys and 6 girls in their breeding program, all of which have many accomplishments and great pedigrees. You can view more information about each dog’s achievements in the show ring and see their pedigree on Mayoke’s website.
In addition, their breeding dogs are health tested to ensure that their pups do not inherit any genetic diseases.
Their pups are ready to go to their forever home at 10 weeks of age, at which time they will be well socialized. In addition, since Ilka is a veterinarian, she performs a health exam on them before they’re ready to go to their new home. The pups will of course also be up to date on their shots and dewormed.
Mayoke is certain that their pups are in good shape, so they offer a 2-year health guarantee.
They breed American as well as Japanese Akitas.
2. Tex-an Akitas
Tex-an is an Akita breeder in Corsicana. It was founded and is run by Connie and Greg, two longtime lovers of Akitas that are avid participants in the show ring.
They have been breeding for many years and have produced plenty of happy and healthy litters.
To ensure that all their Akita pups turn out amazing, they use only the best dogs in their breeding program. Currently, they have 2 males and 3 females that breed, all of which have excellent pedigrees as can be seen on their website.
Furthermore, they test their breeding dogs for eyes, hips, and elbows to ensure that their offspring is as healthy as possible.
Tex-an has many wonderful pictures of their dogs on their website as well, which give a good idea of what to expect when you buy a puppy here.
3. Sherob Akitas
Sherob is a breeder of Akita puppies in Houston. It’s operated by Sherry E. Wallis, a woman with a long history with Akitas and dogs in general. She has served as an AKC judge, is a member of a variety of clubs, and has written several books. If experience is what you’re after, you can’t go wrong with Sherob.
Sherob intends to produce quality dogs of good health and temperament. What’s interesting is that this breeder often cooperates and performs co-breedings with other reputable breeders. This is done because they breed based on intent, and want to produce the best pups possible. Sometimes, that’s best done by co-breeding with sires or dams from other breeders.
Buying a puppy here is not easy though, Sherry is selective with who she’ll let adopt one of her pups. There’s also likely a wait list due to the fact that they only produce pups on a small scale.
4. Stardust Akitas
Stardust is a breeder of Akita puppies in Houston, TX. It was founded in 1995 by Rick and Teresa Witte.
Rick and Teresa are passionate about Akitas and are members of the Akita Club of America, Lone Star Akita Club, and the RRCUS.
In their long time breeding these dogs, they have produced over 80 Champions. In addition, one of their dogs was in the top 10 Akitas in the US every year since 1998.
They have quite a few Akitas in their breeding program, all of whom you can get to know on their website, which states each dog’s name, OFA status, and parents.
5. LiRic Akitas
LiRic is an Akita breeder in Tyler, Texas, operated by Lisa and Richard Coffey.
Lisa and Richard are members of a variety of Akita clubs, such as the ACA, HoTAC, and the LSAC. Besides breeding, Lisa and Richard are also very active in the show ring and their dogs have won many awards.
To see the dogs they use in their breeding program, check out their website. It contains many pictures and a lot of info about each individual dog. If you prefer video, they also have a YouTube channel!
Since LiRic is a small breeder, they only have 1 or 2 litters a year. They emphasize quality over quantity and make sure that all of their breeding dogs are OFA-certified.
6. Akitas East Texas
|Name||Akitas East Texas|
|Phone number||(903) 677-9540|
In Athens, you’ll find a breeder called Akitas East Texas, a family-owned small business that specializes in breeding Akita puppies for the Texas market.
They raise their pups in-home where they’ll be exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, and smells to make them well-adjusted for their lives as pets and to make the transition to their forever home as seamless as possible.
When you buy a puppy here you can expect it to be up to date on its shots and deworming. However, since they’re a small breeder you might be placed on a waitlist for a while.
The single review I was able to find about this breeder online was positive.
7. Jack’s Akitas
|Phone number||(469) 365-9884|
Troy Jackson is an Akita breeder located in Dallas, TX. They do not have much of an online presence. I could only find a listing on the AKC marketplace.
8. QueSera Japanese Akitas
|Phone number||(214) 208-3038|
QueSera is a breeder of Japanese Akitas located in Waxahachie, just outside of Dallas. It’s operated by John And Carol Speier who are longtime members of several Akita clubs in the country.
They produce AKIHO-registered litters.
There you have it, the top 8 Akita breeders in the state of Texas! Hopefully, this overview helps to make the search for the perfect breeder a little easier.
Picking the right breeder is just as important as picking the right breed. Good breeders will lay the foundation for the dog’s entire life. As such, this is not a decision that should be made hastily. Take your time to orient yourself and get familiar with several breeders before ultimately deciding which one you want to go with.
ThePetFaq recommends adoption from a rescue center over buying from a breeder. However, we also understand that adopting is not always possible and that there are many good reasons for choosing to buy from a breeder. Please note that we did not visit these breeders in person, however, we did research them to find as much information about them as possible. Always do your own research when buying a puppy!
